Sport bells are great for training the classic sport lifts. They are all uniform size so as you progress from one weight to the next you don’t have to change you mechanics as the size of the bell changes. This is relevant in the positioning of the bell in your rack position as well as your grip.
Compared to most cast iron bells the sport bell has a much thinner handle to accompany its much larger body. This helps with your grip and your manipulation of the Kettlebell in flight. Once you get used to a sport bell it is hard to go back.
This is not to say that all sport lifters train with sport bells. Not everyone can afford the best or latest equipment. Does this mean they are not allowed to train for the sport? When you only have one bell you have to make due. This is the essence of the sport anyway.
The original gireviks did not have precision competition equipment. Nor did they have a full set off kettlebells because you really don’t need a 20kg bell to get to the 24kg. I sell bells and I’m telling you, you really don’t. They used what they had. The question wasn’t “Ho much can you lift?” it was “How many times can you lift it?” How else would you find a winner of a contest where everyone there can pick up the heaviest weight?
This is how technique was developed. The best lifters emerged and people watched, learned, thought, refined, and, well, you get the idea. The point is that arguing over the kind of bell you use is only going to make the guy selling the bells rich. I own tons of bells. I never understood women’s obsession with shoes until I started buying Kettlebells. But I only really use a few for myself. I am sure I could make due with less as well.
This all goes back to the argument over which one is better. The answer is…it depends what you are doing. And most of the time it doesn’t really matter. It’s like asking what is better, and truck or a motorcycle? They are both awesome. I want them both!
That being said. Rumor has it there will be a few 66kg bells at the Tokyo workshop!!!! I’ll bring my flip-camera!

Re: Kettlebells are kind of like Shoes,,,
I was stuck between the 16 and 24 for swings. Nervous and whiney about my bad disk at l4/5 the 24 just felt like there was great potential for wreckage. So I order a 20 kg from Diluglio's site and it takes a month to get here. In the meantime I keep working apprehensively with the 24. The 20 comes. Now I can get down to real work, with less fear. But its too light. You are right, did not need it.
Then I bought a 28 rkc on Craigslist. Some people never learn . . .
